Mount Frankland

Mt Frankland is a huge granite dome located 30km north of Walpole. Walpole is approximately 420km south of Perth.

Climbing

Mt Frankland is made up of grey coarse granite, which has excellent friction.

Most of the routes at Mt Frankland are bolted face and slab climbs of up to 3 pitches. There are a couple of naturally protected climbs.

There is not a lot of climbs below about grade 16. Free Burma (16) is three pitches and usually the most popular on the cliff. Most other climbs are at least 18 however there are a good selection of 18s.

It is difficult to set up top-ropes on most climbs so a leader is usually required. Some of the climbs, although bolted, are a little run-out so you need to be confident leading at the grade.

A few of the bolted routes need hangers so be sure to pack some bolt plates.

Many of Mt Frankland's climbs are 3 star classics. It is truly a great place to stay at and climb.

Weather

Weather can be a bit of a pain as it has often rained over a long weekend trip. Still, some trips have had perfect weather so you may be lucky. The nights can be cold.

Northern Slabs

Not located on the Mt Frankland dome itself but in the opposite direction from the parking area.

The Elephant

Look for the Elephant head rock feature. This is the first climbing area reached from the parking area.

Lower Slab

The slab leading to the Terrace ledge offer a few easier climbs and are one of the main routes up to the Terrace.

The Terrace

The large ledge/terrace above the Lower Slab. The routes can be climbed as a single pitch or continued up to the summit as multi-pitch climbs.

Wreckage Ledge / Head Wall

A small platform above the Terrace. A double bolt abseil chain provides a descent route to the Terrace (35m).

The Main Face

The large slabby face to the right of the Terrace.
